Essential knowledge

Tips & warnings

The two things that actually change the trip: darkness on rural roads, and the Reynisfjara gate.

Warning

Reynisfjara warning lights

Yellow/red system — never green. After 2025 fatalities and a February 2026 landslide, the red threshold was lowered and a gate now blocks the cave and columns. Stay ≥30 m from the water. Never turn your back to the sea. Treat it as a brief, stay-back viewpoint.

Warning

Night driving on two days

Sep 27 and Sep 29 are the failure days. Sunset ~19:03–19:17; full dark by ~20:00. Headlights always on. Slow for sheep. Use only designated pull-offs for aurora — never stop on the carriageway.

Warning

Reykjanes eruption watch

No eruption as of August 2026 (last Sundhnúkur event Jul 16–Aug 5, 2025). IMO reports more magma under Svartsengi than at any point in the series; another eruption is considered likely in weeks or months. KEF and Route 1 have been unaffected. Blue Lagoon can close at short notice.

Tip

Chip-and-PIN before you leave town

Many unmanned Orkan/ÓB pumps need a chip-and-PIN card. Orkan also takes Apple/Google Pay. Verify the PIN at a staffed N1 (Hella 24h, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur 09:00–22:00) and top up during open hours.

Tip

Parking apps

Parka for most south-coast lots (Sólheimajökull, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Dyrhólaey). EasyPark for Kirkjufell (24/7). Download both before you lose signal.

Tip

Aurora window

Late September is an excellent equinox window (Russell–McPherron). In Iceland, Kp 2–3 is enough with clear skies. Best 21:00–02:00. Use vedur.is aurora + cloud map and the NOAA SWPC 3-day Kp forecast.

Tip

Pace threshold

If combined pace (stops + driving) runs below ~40 km/h, drop Djúpalónssandur on Sep 27 and Fjaðrárgljúfur on Sep 29.

Tip

Mobility discipline

Reynisfjara: stay behind the warning-light line. Kerið, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Gullfoss: flat rim / upper viewpoint only — skip stairs and descents. Djúpalónssandur: viewpoints, not the beach. Seljalandsfoss: skip the behind-falls loop.
